Overcoming Hunger in Conflict Situations: Germany joins the Global Network Against Food Crises

04/01/2026

Food crises are a global challenge: almost one in twelve people worldwide still suffers from hunger. Addressing this requires agile approaches, new partnerships and sound evidence.

By joining the “Global Network Against Food Crises” (GNAFC), Germany brings together humanitarian and development actors and strengthens the multilateral system in the fight against hunger.

The initiative aims to better prevent food crises worldwide, to prepare for them and to provide targeted assistance – in cooperation with UN organizations, such as FAO and WFP, and international partners. In times of increasing conflicts and crises, a well-coordinated approach involving key partners is of highest importance. Multilateral initiatives such as the Global Network Against Food Crises lay the foundations for this global cooperation. Germany is therefore committed to advancing the work of the network.

Evidence-based knowledge and sound analysis are crucial for a better understanding of food crises and for making strategically sound decisions. The network makes a significant contribution to this with publications such as the annual Global Report on Food Crises: the report’s analyses are fed into high-level discussion forums and decision-making bodies, including the United Nations Security Council. In addition, national food security crises preparedness plans are being developed to identify impending food crises at an early stage and act accordingly.

Evidence generation, knowledge management and multilateral cooperation with the joint goal to reduce hunger and malnutrition is a critical foundation for stable and resilient societies, which is a prerequisite for regional and global security.
