For a More Peaceful Tomorrow: Germany takes over Chair of PBC

02/07/2025

Effective peacebuilding addresses root causes of conflict, improves preventive action and builds resilience. On January 30, Germany took over as Chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission in 2025, alongside the new Vice-Chairs from Brazil, Japan, Poland and Morocco.

Established in 2005, the UN Peacebuilding Commission offers an integrated and inclusive approach to conflict prevention and sustaining peace. It is one of the key bodies of the United Nations to advance the global peace agenda.

By bringing together a broad range of actors from governments, international organizations, civil society and financial institutions, the Peacebuilding Commission is uniquely placed to foster international support for peacebuilding efforts.

In her inaugural statement as the new Chair, Germany’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador Antje Leendertse, praised the unique bridging role of the Peacebuilding Commission. Germany seeks to strengthen the Commission’s role by linking it more closely to the work of the Security Council. The 25th and 10th anniversaries of the UN agendas on “Women, Peace and Security” and “Youth, Peace and Security” in 2025 offer opportunities to further tap their potential for Peacebuilding. Germany remains committed to address root causes of conflict and support nationally owned peacebuilding and prevention efforts, to stabilize societies and build resilience.

As the largest long-term donor of the UN Peacebuilding Fund, Germany has proven its deep commitment to help promote security and peace. This commitment is also a core element in our candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council 2027/2028 – to stand up for respect, justice and peace.
