Living up to the 2030 Agenda: The Hamburg Sustainability Conference, 7-8 October 2024
10/08/2024
For two days, around 1,600 participants met in Hamburg, Germany, to forge new alliances for concrete progress on sustainability. As a follow-up to the Summit of the Future, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz invited leaders from around the world to the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) to discuss strategies and solutions aimed at addressing pressing global challenges. Focus of discussion: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the accelerated implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The HSC was initiated by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Michael Otto Foundation and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. International policymakers and global leaders from the private sector, science and civil society joined in alliances and created new initiatives and partnerships for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in three different thematic strands: Reshaping the international financial architecture, unleashing investments for SDGs, and leveraging transformation. This included concrete topics as green hydrogen, batteries for energy transition, responsible AI for sustainable development and carbon pricing mechanisms. More than 15 agreements were reached.
Led by the vision that reaching the SDGs requires more interdisciplinary and trustful collaboration among the international community, this event was only the first of a series of conferences on sustainability. In times of increasing tensions, the Conference promotes open dialogue and exchange and it specifically aims at strengthening the role and responsibility of the private sector by forging new sustainability alliances across sectors and stakeholders.
Germany is convinced that united action is needed to achieve sustainability at global level. The HSC is an expression of resolve – to live up to our shared responsibility for the 2030 Agenda.
