Foreign Minister Wadephul in New York: Highlighting Germany’s Candidacy for the UN Security Council

05/04/2026

As the world faces growing challenges to peace and security, Foreign Minister Wadephul’s visit to the United Nations in New York on April 27 und 28 highlights Germany’s commitment to strengthening global cooperation. During his trip, Wadephul met with key figures to discuss current global upheavals, Germany’s pledge for its Security Council candidacy and ongoing UN reforms.

As Foreign Minister Wadephul personally met with Ambassadors and Ministers from many UN Member States, he made clear that Germany’s candidacy is grounded in the belief that the UN Security Council is vital in resolving conflicts and upholding peace. Germany’s candidacy is not just about securing a seat on the Security Council; it is about helping to shape the future of global security, with a clear focus on justice, respect and lasting peace.

Minister Wadephul stated:

“In this volatile geopolitical environment, the UN is under enormous pressure. The UN currently faces a budgetary crisis, a mistrust in multilateralism, and a lack of respect for international law. Germany is ready to take on even more responsibility as a strong, reliable and independent voice in the United Nations. That is the foundation of Germany’s candidacy to the UN Security Council for 2027 / 2028.”

As one of the world’s leading economies and a major donor to the UN system, Germany is actively involved in peacekeeping and development missions worldwide. More than 30 UN organizations are based in Germany, with staff across key cities like Bonn, Berlin and Hamburg.

Foreign Minister Wadephul acknowledged that the complexity of modern conflicts shows that the international community and the UN face limitations. He emphasized the need for reform to ensure that the UN remain capable of addressing future global challenges effectively. In this vein, Germany strongly supports the UN’s ongoing reform process, championed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, to enhance the organization’s credibility and actionability.
