Advancing Peace Through Partnership: Germany as Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2025

02/12/2026

Peacebuilding is essential to creating a world better equipped to prevent, manage, and resolve conflicts through both traditional and innovative approaches. This requires bringing together all relevant actors from within and beyond the United Nations to listen, learn and act collectively. As Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) in 2025, Germany advanced these important discussions.

The Commission’s regional work was reinforced through deeper country-specific engagements, including meetings on the Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Mauritania, São Tomé and Príncipe, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

We advanced the Commission’s thematic work while remaining firmly committed to the principles of national ownership, mutual benefit, and equality among partners. In this context, the PBC convened meetings on the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda and South-South Cooperation.

The PBC’s partnerships were further strengthened through a consultative meeting with the African Union and a visit to Colombia, which helped shape an understanding of effective approaches to sustaining peace.

We extend our sincere thanks to Vice-Chairs Brazil, Japan, Morocco and Poland for their trustful cooperation throughout the year. We wish Morocco every success as it assumes the Chair for 2026. Germany will continue its support as Vice-Chair of the PBC in the coming year.
